The difficult thing about the whole blogging experience is coming up the topics.
I was discussing this with two other teachers who felt the same way I did about blogging — what the heck will I write. After the brief encounter, we all came to the same conclusion — students need to understand that blogging is tough for us, too. We sit down and struggle for inspiration just was much, and probably more, than they do. Therefore the wrestling with topics topic is excellent fodder for blogging.
The old saying goes, “Write what you know.” Several former teachers and professors echo through my mind with this advice, but the problem isn’t really that simple. After all who would try to write something they didn’t know. Sitting down to write a blog about astrophysics would never cross my mind, because I simply don’t know enough about the topic to get anywhere. I think the real advice given should be, “Believe in what you write.” People struggle with having faith in their ability to write, not with topics.
Be sincere. Be honest. Be truthful. Then your writing will be fruitful and multiple, because you can’t fake sincerity. Everybody, especially students, knows when someone is being insincere. And everybody hates it. Write about anything. All topics and subjects are open for review, but be honest.
